THE CHALLENGES AMONG THE SCHOOLS PARTICIPATING IN THE SEA MARVEL PROJECT HAVE BEGUN
The students’ classes in Sicily and Malta will discuss topics related to biodiversity and the responsibility towards the environment
The educational challenges among the schools that have joined the SEA MARVEL project will be held in May and June.
The SEA MARVEL project is organising three challenges:
One in Malta which will see the participants drafting letters addressed to local politicians and decision-makers, to highlight the need to act immediately for the protection of the marine environment Discover more
One in Sicily, involving the schools of Catania participating in the project, during which the students will carry out activities in the Marine Protected Area of the Cyclopean Isles to understand the treasures of the marine environment and to develop action plans to protect it Discover more
One which will take place online, aimed at the participating classes of the municipalities of Giarre, Milazzo and Lampedusa, during which the students will get to know each other, they will be able to ask questions to experts, they will present the main features of the area where they live and they will compete by preparing papers and participating in games and quizzes. The prize for the top two classes, one in Malta and one in Catania, are two study trips: the winning class from Malta will visit Sicily at the beginning of the next school year to discover the sites of the Natura 2000 network, while the class from Sicily, in the same period, will travel to Malta to discover the precious Maltese biodiversity.
As per the class which will win the online challenge, the winners will be joining conservation biologists in their field work studying dolphins in Natura 2000 sites in Sicily, in order to discover cetaceans and all the other marine species constituting the unique and rich biodiversity of Sicilian waters.
For the challenge we would like to invite classes from Year 7 and Year 8 in secondary schools to compete between classes and schools therefore expressing their desire to save, enhance, admire marine versatile life through the production of a portfolio containing the following items:

1. Written statement/letters addressed to Ministers for the environment and education or the President of Malta on how to urgently save and enhance the marine environment.

2. Written statement/letters addressed to the public on how each one should admire the versatile marine life around our Maltese Islands.

3. Drawings/Paintings/Photographs or Video clip of what our seas offer us and what we should give back in return.
Each class/group of not more that 25 individuals [that include the teachers involved per group] shall produce ONE portfolio containing the 3 items listed above.
The portfolio carefully labelled with the full list of students participating per group shall be submitted to us both electronically via WeTransfer to adriana.vella@um.edu.mt and as a hardcopy through the school head office by the 8th of May 2023. All students taking part will receive a certificate of participation.
The winning group/class will be made official on the 8th of June – World Oceans Day. The winners win an educational trip of several days to visit, learn about and admire a marine Natura 2000 site in Sicily with conservation scientists. The visit will be organised to occur in September 2023 and all associated costs for travel, living and accommodation for the 25 winner participants will be covered by the SEA MARVEL project.
