Grimaldi supports the SEA MARVEL project with educational workshops on board its cargo ships

The company Grimaldi Lines has once again proved its commitment towards the conservation of marine ecosystems through a long-standing collaboration with the ISPRA FLT Network and the SEA MARVEL project, together with the University of Catania among the network partners. In July, during the sea trip aimed at studying of marine life and human activities in the Strait of Sicily, Grimaldi hosted informative workshops on board its cargo ships departing from the port of Catania towards Malta. These workshops, held by Di3A researchers at the University of Catania, allowed the crew to actively participate in marine monitoring and to become real “Sentinels of the Sea”. Furthermore, we began distributing information posters created specifically for passengers and ship crews.

The first workshop took place on 15 July on board the Eurocargo Savona, under the command of master Mihail Mihalev, who immediately supported the initiative by inviting the entire crew to actively participate in the first meeting held on the same evening. During the workshop, the Sea Marvel team has provided information on how to recognize and report the presence of vulnerable marine species, such as cetaceans and turtles, through the use of the project website. The crew showed great interest and involvement in learning how to actively contribute to the conservation of marine biodiversity.

On the following day, during the navigation backwards from Malta, the crew gathered on the command bridge around the researchers from the University of Catania during their usual monitoring, carried out according to the FLT (Fixed Line Transect) protocols. On this occasion it was possible to further explore the objectives of the SEA MARVEL project and answer the many questions that were addressed to the observers, Alessandra Raffa and Enrico Giarrusso. Involving the crew as Sentinels of the Sea thus proves to be an innovative way to extend the monitoring network and to ensure greater awareness on the fragility of marine ecosystems.

Grimaldi is known for its commitment to sustainability and the protection of the marine environment. The company has already actively supported the FLT Network over the years, proving a strong interest towards marine conservation. The opportunity to host these workshops on board their cargo ships has further strengthened their commitment to greater attention towards the marine environment and the species living there.

The initiative is a tangible example of how the private sector can collaborate with scientific institutions to promote the conservation of our precious sea.
