On July 31, 2023, a workshop was conducted at the D’amico Palace in Milazzo, dedicated to local fishers, including those associated with the “Cooperativa Pescatori Marina di Patti” and actively working in the area in front of the Capo Milazzo MPA. This meeting provided an opportunity to present them with the current results of the SEA MARVEL project, including those achieved through the collaboration with the “Sentinels of the sea” fishing communities distributed throughout the project’s action area. During the meeting, a special emphasis was placed on providing participants with a comprehensive overview of the project context. All the planned work phases, the activities conducted so far by team members and the expected objectives were described. During the workshop, preliminary results were presented, which also involved reports acquired during fishing activities by fishers, shared with researchers from the University of Catania.
After this introductory overview, the focus shifted to the issues most shared by local fishers and possible strategies to implement for their resolution. At the end of the workshop, members of the project team provided the fishers with gadgets and informational materials, including explanatory posters on vulnerable marine species and guides on key alien or rare marine species that might be spotted or caught.
